""I learned how destructive and horrible war can be...and how much suffering and pain people from both sides of our community endured..If everyone in Ireland could see what I've seen here, our conflict would be over" "Mary, Community Worker

Councils

The International School for Peace Studies works closely with local councils and their officers to bring about real change at a local level within our communities.

The main aim of our Local Councils Programme is to build capacity and empower local communities by delivering community development and community relations programmes with a focus on targeting groups, or individuals within groups, who have a role to play within their communities in tackling sectarianism but who need additional support to understand the processes involved.

The programme also exploits the potential for mutual understanding, respect for differences and reconciliation through remembering.

Through this programme participants challenge traditionally held attitudes which the Catholic and Protestant communities share for one another based on mistrust and intolerance and in turn they bring these new insights back to their communities. In this way the benefits gained extend beyond the lifetime of the programme.
