The Messines Peace Walk was inspired by the Minister and Vice-President of the Flemish Parliament, Renaat Landuyt, and was held on the date most suitable and closest to 14th September, the date when the International School for Peace Studies was officially opened by the Minister and by Mr. William T. McCarter, Chairman of the International Fund for Ireland, in 2001.

It is hoped to reintroduce this annual event when the walkers will brave the pleasant Belgian heat and the beautiful countryside of Mesen/Messines in optional 8 km, 10 km or 20 km walks, and join together with the local brass band to celebrate their exertions in a good cause. All proceeds go directly to the International School for Peace Studies.
